Final Evaluation

The project has been very successful; I was able to achieve all the products that I wanted to produce from my statement of intent. I successfully designed my music festival logo, poster, tickets, lanyards and merchandise, such as: badges, t-shirt, and key rings.

The key things that I have learnt are the different ways of hand making and physically producing my products. I also learnt how to use resin for my badges to be put in, as I have never used resin before, it was a new and interesting experience, even though it did not come out perfect, I think it went well, as it matches my theme. I have also learnt to not just stick to digital work, but also use other techniques like using ink, oil pastels, and more. I also used the laser cutter, etching designs on different materials, which I really enjoyed, and hope to use again in the future, for other future projects.

The project did not go as intended. Of course I made all the outcomes and products that I wanted for my project, but didn’t go to plan, was the order I made the products. Most parts of the projects I looked at my time plan, but towards the end, I didn’t look at my time plan, but carried on with what I was doing and what I thought should do next. I didn’t do what was planned, but I think it worked out better that way, as I got rid of all the challenging stuff at the start of the project, and left the easier, quicker finishing things at the end of the project.

The new abilities and skills that I discovered is that I can use other materials and techniques and not just digital. I don’t always need to use a computer to do my work. There are other ways to produce my designs. I have also learnt time keeping, it was hard keeping up with everything, but in the end I got through it and finished everything I needed to do. Another thing is actually hand making products. If I was looking back to last year, I would have never physically made products of my own, they would just be designs printed out on to paper. I’m glad I was able to physically make my products.

I would say my weakness is sometimes annotation, although I write a lot of descriptive and critical reviews about my work through my processes of the work and on my blog, which I then print and stick into my sketchbook. Another thing is time. I need to work on using my time better and not getting distracted. I find that when other people are around me I get distracted more. I work best when I am on my own, as I can just do my work, and there is no one trying to interact with me.

If I was going to do this project again, I would professionally get my products made I think, although, I don’t want to get rid of the handmade mark I have on my work, because I can say that I made this, not someone else. But, it would be pleasing to see my work properly made, as it makes it look more realistic. Another thing is that I would do more experimentation, by using more techniques like printmaking and screen printing. I would also like to use the laser cutter more, as I really enjoy etching things into different materials. If I was to make my t-shirts again, and keep the handmade mark, I would screen-print the text instead of using fabric paint, as it is not as smooth and it didn’t come out how I wanted it, as I wanted it to look cleaner.

Resin Display – Badges

resin

IMG_4642IMG_4644

Part of my display for the exhibition I wanted it to look interesting. I wanted to show my badges in an interesting way, instead of just attaching it to products. So, I decided to use resin, as they come out clear and you will be able to see what is inside. It didn’t come out how I wanted to look, as at first, I wanted it to look neat and clean. But I like how it has turned out, as relating back to my cup sculpture, it was not perfect, there were twists and scrunched up pieces, and this is what it is like. At festivals, things will not turn out perfect or will be scrunched up, and that is why I think the piece is successful. Although in the outcome of this piece, some of the designs on the badges has rubbed off or ripped off, as it has been touched against the cup too much, and is not on the inside of the resin, it is on the outside slightly.

Ticket design ideas, process and final product

ticket.JPG

I first created this basic design, as I wanted to experiment with a different material and etch it into a clear plastic acrylic. I designed it all in black and white, as the laser cutter picks out the black drawings and text. It was something different, a ticket made out of a perspex, its unique, not a lot of festivals do this. My idea was to add the QR code, to scan them instead of using a barcode, it was something different. Another thing I chose a circle, as in my head I was thinking after the QR code has been scanned, you can then take out the circle, to show that this ticket has been used, so they are left with a big hole in their ticket.

contactsheet.JPGimg_0058.jpg

This was the result of the perspex ticket, I think it came out interesting. what went wrong is that everything was too small. The text was too small, and so was the QR code and the actual size of the ticket itself.  Although, I really liked the idea of a ticket made out of a clear perspex.

ticket-ideas.jpg

I designed some more tickets, I decided I wanted to have them traditionally made out of card, as it would work best than using perspex as a ticket.

123

For this ticket, I used the same layout at I did for the perspex ticket, as I really liked the QR code idea. I have also made it a circle so that you can punch out the circle, after the QR code has been used. I also used the colour blue as I wanted it to look similar to my final poster. I have also added the background to make it look similar. The text is also in white and yellow, like the poster. I wanted it to look minimal, so I didn’t want to add too much information. I think the ticket came out successful, as it has all the information needed and it is appealing and attractive. It looks interesting, more than just a plain bold colour.

45

I wanted to try and design the ticket similar to the Download festival ticket. It is very simple and basic. I added my logo big, as it is a key information, to show what the festival is called. I have also made the information on the white square simple like you would see on some tickets. I don’t think this ticket went well, as it is really boring and too simple, it is not very appealing or aesthetically pleasing. To make it look more interesting, I could add in images or drawings in the background.

678

I really like this design, I find it appealing. the text is very simple, I decide on white because it is a colour is that is well shown on a black background; it makes it stand out. I have also made the logo big, so it is noticeable, and you are able to see what the festival is called, and what year it is being held on. What I like most about the first design, is the QR code and the fact that you’re making a massive hole punch after gaining entry to the festival, I could have done it on this ticket, to make it look different to most tickets.

IMG_4629

The final tickets came out really well, I chose these two tickets, as they were the most interesting and appealing tickets, they were also a better size, as I find the other ticket was too long, which made it feel like you needed more on it, when you only have small amount of information needed on the ticket.

Wristband final products

contact.JPG

These are the final products of the wristbands that I created. I first designed the digitally and then printed them on to iron on transfer paper. I ironed them onto some fabric that I cut down into strips. the blue and red wristbands didn’t work as well when it came to trying to put the stopper on, as the fabric was too thick. But the other two work, as I used the same fabric; I am unsure what type of fabric it was, although it was quite thin. I have also attached the tags onto the wristbands, I made designed them digitally first and then printed them out onto card, I did this so it was sturdy, and it would flop around. Although, the card, when or if bent, it would create a crease in the card, which is an unsuccessful part of the wristbands. I think the wristbands came out well, although, the two wristbands that I wanted black, came out a slight dark grey colour, I don’t know if it was the printer or the colour used on the digital designs. If I was to do this and make this wristband again, I would get it done professionally with my designs on them, so that it looked clean and well made; as this is handmade.

Wristband design ideas and processes

123

For this first design, I knew how I wanted the layout of the piece to be, which you will see that I have used throughout the wristbands. I just wanted to change the background of each different wristband designs. I used the same images/drawings that I used for the final poster, as I wanted it to look similar; link together. I added the dates the festival was held across, to show this is the date and year the festival that people attended when they look back at the wristband as a souvenir. I added the logo, to show that this is the festival that they went to, it is also branding so you will know that this is the festival. I also added the word ‘Weekend Arena’ as it is like a ticket, what access you’re allowed to be in. I used white as the text, so it was easier to read and more noticeable. Instead of just adding one silhouette crowd, I added multiple, across the bottom of the wristband, to show that there will be many people at the festival, it is a big crowd.

The wristband is red, as it is one of my main colour for my festival. I have also added a tag in the middle of the wristband. The tag is for you to put money on the tag and then use that to buy food and drink and even merchandise so that you don’t have to carry loads of money around. you can pre-load money on the tag. I made it the shape of a guitar pick, as it is for a music festival. The design is quite simple. I just used the crowd as a design, as it is what is the main focus, the crowd having a good time and enjoying the music and their summer.

67

This wristband is quite simple, I did similar to the last wristband. The only thing I changed is that I added the crowd upside down as well, I also made it white, so it didn’t blend into the background. Another thing is the shape of the tag. I chose to do a normal rectangle tag instead, to see what I liked best. I added the logo, to show that the wristband is for this festival. The tags are for you to add money on to it and then buy whatever you want with them within the festival so that you don’t have to worry about carrying a lot of money around with you, in case it gets stolen. You can preload money onto the card in case you didn’t want to bring cash with you to put it on the tag.

8910

I really liked how the design of the first wristband turned out, so I wanted to do the same for this wristband, but with a different background colour. I also really liked how the tag came out in the third wristband design, so I used it for this design as well, as it is quite simple.

Keyring design ideas process

img_0975.jpg

I first off roughly designed the key rings in thumbnails, as it is easiest to get my thoughts out of how I want my keyrings to look like. I will then digitalise it afterwards so that I know exactly how it will look and designed visually.

Keyring ideas - different materialsfabric-keyrings.jpg

After doing so, I created these different pieces. On the left, you can see loads of different shapes. I thought I could make the key ring a different shape, not just the usual shapes, I thought I would do a guitar pick shape, as this festival is all about the music, and it was something different. For the rectangle pieces, I thought they could be etched into wood, as I would be using a different material it would look very interesting, I could have also used clear perspex, or even coloured perspex. for the circular keyrings, I would also get them etched into perspex or wood, as they would look interesting and different. On the right, they would be my fabric keyrings. I would make them out of fabric of course and use iron-on transfer paper to get my design on there. I think this would work best, as hand stitching would be really hard, as the designs are fairly small. Another way I could do it is by using fabric paint and carefully creating the design with white fabric paint for most of the keyrings.

contact.JPGimg_4615.jpg

This is what the final outcomes were. I really like all the black keyrings. as they have interesting designs on them, they are also similar. They are similar to my t-shirt designs, as I want them to all link together. I don’t really think the red key ring came out successful, as when ironing on the paper onto the fabric, I ended up having the background white, and it doesn’t match the fabric colour. If I was to do it again, I would use the same matching colour as the background from the designs. I would also get it professionally made from a company, so that it looks realistic and well made, instead of hand making it myself.

Badge design ideas – Process and final products

img_0976.jpgbadges-design-ideas.jpg

To start off designing my badges, I roughly drew out how I wanted my badges to look; layout wise. I then annotated each thing, what I wanted it to look like. I did this first, to get a visual of what I wanted. I then processed it digitally, as it is easier to visually see my design, as I wanted to use drawings that I did at the start of the project, to use and contextualise them into my badges. I did a range of different badge designs, so there was a variety to produce and show different design, I didn’t want them to look the same. I mainly focused on red and black, as they are my two main colours for the festival. All the drawings that I used for the badges relate to the festival in a way, the tiger drawings represent the festival, as they are the naive mascot, the face of the festival. the drawing of the girl/ skull drawing, represent the music, as some people, as seen in my research, ‘Kerrang!’ magazine have skull drawings in their work. sunglasses are part of summer; as it is a summer festival. The rock hand gesture represents having fun and supporting the bands. The crowd drawings represent the crowd atmosphere at the festival.

img_0969.jpgIMG_0967

(above left image) I experimented with different material. I first created the badge using paper, with one of the designs printed on the badge. I also did one using iron-on transfer paper and transferring the design onto some fabric to see what it would look like with different materials. I didn’t like the outcome of the fabric badge, as it just looked like a button. It didn’t look right. I then continued making the rest of my badges with the other designs that I created.

My badges, contextualised. Placed on a model, and bag. to show where you could attach your badges. It doesn’t have to be just worn on your clothes.

Lanyard Final Products

ContactSheet-001.jpg

Images of the final product of making the lanyards and the attachments that go with the lanyard. What I did to create the final products were first created my designs for the VIP and the set times for the bands and then I printed it out onto thick card. I did this, so it was sturdy, and it wouldn’t flop around. I also added the VIP pass into a small plastic wallet for the lanyard, as it is the most important pass, it needs to be kept safe, in case it rains it would be waterproof. For the lanyards itself, I used iron on transfer paper to add in the typography to the lanyard, as it was easiest doing it that way, as screen-printing would be hard to control and do, as the lanyard is thin. I then used some red stitching and stitched in the cross/crosses onto the lanyard, as I didn’t want to have the whole lanyard made from iron on transfer. I wanted the design to be hand stitched on. It was easy this way. If I was to make it again, I would get it professionally done, and get the companies who create lanyards create them cleaner looking; making it look more professional and realistic.

Lanyard Design Ideas & Processes

img_0974.jpg

Firstly, I quickly drew out some thumbnails of how I could possibly want my lanyards to look like and the layout of how I want the set design tags and the VIP tag to look like that I will be attaching to the lanyards. I did this to get a sense of what layout I want, and then, later, do a digital design, showing visually how I want the piece to look like.

1234

After creating the thumbnail drawings of the lanyards, I processed it digitally to visually show how I want the layout to be and the design to look like. I first went on doing the basic of the lanyard, as some festival lanyards are very basic, and just repeatedly say the name of the festival around the lanyard. I then wanted to add in colour to my lanyards because it looked boring. I chose the colour red, because red, black and white are my main colours for the festival. Another thing is that you can see that the typography is in the same type as the logo. I did this because I didn’t want to add in the whole logo, but simply wanted the name of the festival on the lanyard, so you will still know what the festival is called and the possibility of knowing what the logo looks like. I went simple and made crosses between where I have added the name of the festival. I started off with one cross, which I really liked, because it was simple, but had a hint of colour, making it more attractive. I then added a border, which I liked, but I don’t think I would use it because it would be hard to produce, as the lanyards that I bought are quite thin, the same goes to the double cross work. Although, I could take out the border part of the double cross design. Which would work better than doing a border.

To create these designs physically, I would get out my lanyards and I would print out the name of the festival, and the design I want the type to be onto iron-on transfer paper, and then iron them onto my lanyards. I would then stitch the red crosses with red thread.

layout.JPG

vip.jpg

I then went onto creating the VIP passes. I decided on a background first, which was simply the same layout that I used for my final poster design. I really wanted them to match because then they all link together as a festival. Another thing was I couldn’t decide on a colour, so I change the colours of the background. By changing the colour of the background to red, I had to change the colour of the logo, as it merged together with the background. I then decided on a layout of how I wanted to place everything. I think the passes look very professional looking. I think I will use all designs, as there are three days in the festival and they could have a different colour for each day, or I could choose one colour, and have that as one VIP access for the whole of the festival, instead of three different ones each day.

process.JPG

set-times.jpg

I then went onto creating the set times for the different bands throughout 3 days, at 3 different stages. I used the same background as my final poster and for my VIP passes. I wanted them to match. I also chose the same colours, as I wanted them to be the same as the VIP passes, as I really liked the colours. I made the layout of the set times like

the final poster, as I want them to link. I would use all three design colours for my lanyards, as I wanted them to be all different, different for each day. I didn’t want them to be the same colour, as it would clash, and you wouldn’t know which card is for each day unless you look at the date. It would be easier and faster to know the colour of the passes for each day, so you know when the bands go on for the days.

4.jpg

I ended up using this as my final VIP pass, as it is a different colour to the set time passes. it would just be easier to recognise. I chose the colour yellow because VIP means very important person, and the colour is closest to gold. Meaning they are high up on the scale of most people. They are more privileged; being able to go to most places normal ticket holders cannot.

T-shirt

12345

Contact sheets of images that I took with people modelling with my music festival t-shirt merchandise. I have taken images from the front and back, to show what is on the t-shirt. I have also taken images of my models wearing the way they want to, to show different styles and ways you could wear the t-shirts. I have also taken images of female and male models so that there is a range and not the same. The t-shirts are in medium and large sizes. This is to show the different sizes that would fit different people. The t-shirts are unisex. Some images are taken as a group, to show all the t-shirts together, and would help for advertisement, to show that anyone and everyone could wear it.

Untitled-5nat-and-ben.jpg

I started off using primary colours and creating different sized shaped rectangles, in different forms, to make the piece look more interesting. I have changed the opacity down, so you could see the image. I have also added the logo, to show that this belongs to the music festival. After trying it on top of the image, I wanted to try something different and place it in the back of the image. I layered the different coloured shapes, changing the opacity. I chose colours that I thought would work best together, some being complementary colours.

7.jpg6.jpg

After creating the piece with different colours in the background, I started doing more, with different colours and different sized shapes. I like these ones most as the colours are not too bright and bold. I like that they are dulled down slightly, so it’s not too distracting from the actual image itself.

untitled-2.jpg

After completing those designs, I thought I would experiment with different shapes, instead of just squares and rectangles. So, I decided to use circles, in different colours and sizes. I don’t these as much, as they just look out of place. Although, I do like the image itself. As I wanted to show the back of the t-shirt, but showing that we can all connect, with music.

nat and lucy group

After deciding I wanted to try different shapes, I went onto using triangles. I used yellow as a background colour, as I thought it was bright and would bring attention. I also added the logo, to show that the image belongs to Fury Fest. I really liked how these images turned out, as it is a group image of my t-shirts/merchandise. It shows a range, with people joining together. the image on the left shows the front of one t-shirt and the back of a different one, although, the back is the same as the t-shirt on the left.

2

I want to make the image look more interesting and crazy. So, I decided to create this piece. I thought it looked interesting, and eye-catching, as it is not something you would normally see.
